Family Home Evening Idea "I Will Go and Do"

My kids have had some trouble being obedient lately. They have been a little whiney when it has come to doing things around the house and listening to dear old mom and dad. So I thought we would talk about Nephi's obedience to his father Lehi when he was told to go and get the brass plates (Book of Mormon)from King Laban back in Jerusalem. (1 Nephi 3:7) Nephi was faithful and obedient, but his older brothers did not want to go and they murmured and complained. I told the kids that we could be like Nephi or we could be whiners like Nephi's brothers, Laman and Lemuel.

Opening Song: Nephi's Courage (Primary Songbook) (1st Verse)

Opening Prayer

Scripture: 1 Nephi 3:7 (use as part of the game)

Game: "Capture the Plates" Scavenger/Treasure Hunt

Instructions: Hide a Book of Mormon and place clues around the house to find it. Here's an example of what we did. We made up the clues and used walkie talkies to give out the clues. One for me, and one for the kids to take turns talking/getting clues.

"Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to travel to Jerusalem, find Laban, and secure the plates to take back to father Lehi in the wilderness.

Clue #1
Laban was first seen climbing up a watch tower high above the city. (Top of the stairs/landing) If you don't have stairs, you could place a chair in another room.

Clue #2
As Laban looked down over the city, he saw the marketplace and decided to go satisfy his hunger by buying some apples. (Box of apples in kitchen)You could put food in a grocery bag and set it on the table.

Clue #3
After Laban left the marketplace, he traveled across a bridge (rug & chairs put together) and entered his castle.

Clue #4
Laban was tired from all the walking and went to his bedroom to take a nap in his big bed. (Master bedroom, mom and dad's bed)

Clue #5
When Laban woke up, he remembered it was time for a meeting with his royal guard. He put on his robe and crown, then walked down the stairs into the royal court, and sat down on his royal throne. (Rocking chair) (I hid the Book of Mormon under the rocking chair/recliner cushion)

Clue #6
Laban has a secret compartment under his throne. This is where he usually keeps the plates/history of his people.

Mark and read 1 Nephi 3:7 after The Book of Mormon is found.

Bear your testimony about the blessings and importance of being obedient. Encourage everyone to be courageous and faithful like Nephi and to have a good attitude of "Going and Doing."

Song: Nephi's Courage (Last Verse)

Prayer

Treat: We did mini icecream cones (Drumsticks). The kids loved the scavenger hunt so much that I put the icecream cones in a bag and hid it outside to stay cold. Then we played hangman to find out the clue of where the FHE treats were hidden. The word was "back porch"

The kids found the icecream and we sat in the kitchen and talked around the table. They said, "Mom-that was the best Family Home Evening ever!" They had so much fun, that when they were finished getting ready for bed, they waited for dad to come home from school and repeated the lesson for him.

Thanks for sharing! This is so awesome and we SO need a lesson on obedience. Next Monday, I hope I have children committing to be like Nephi!

If you are ever at Deseret Book or Seagull, they have the cutest tapes/CD's called "Scripture Scouts" My mom bought these for us when we were growing up and we would listen to them when we went for rides in the car or on vacation. My kids love the songs and stories they tell from the Book of Mormon and New Testament. I especially like the Scripture Scouts dog named "Boo"...who also acts out some of the characters in the scriptures with them, he's hilarious!
